The first time I saw Romain's work it confused the hell out of me. Wandering around Soho's Sex Shops as a wide-eyed teenager, i remember seeing copies of the Creation Books published City of the Broken Dolls and again and again would flick through, unsure of the appeal of Japanese girls in bandages, wheelchairs, on crutches...i wasn't quite twisted enough at such a tender age, that would come later...
Years later I attended the opening exhibition to mark the publishing of Romain's Tokyo Sex Underground and at the time didn't realise that the work was by the same guy whose previous book had perplexed me so.
Recently, I have begun using bandages and medical equipment in my own work, which brought to mind the earlier book i had seen. Looks like it had left quite an impression on me and it took me sometime to find myself a copy (having not picked it up previously...silly me!) and have been collecting his work ever since.
I'm now very glad to say that i have struck up a correspondence with Romain and he has kindly agreed to be the first participant in the new guest gallery section of my site. I hope you enjoy his works as much as I do.
